Hyperpigmentation, Textured Skin and Large Pores Skincare Routine

Yesterday on YouTube I shared my updated skincare routine that I’ve been following closely for the last 3 months. I stuck to the regime more closely than I ever have when it comes to skincare and being that we’ve been inside for a full month, I’ve really noticed a difference. My skin issues seem to be genetic. I have very similar skin to my mother and my late grandmother. We all have very large noticeable pores on our cheeks. I also have an issue with very textured skin and hyperpigmentation. I decided to take control of what I could externally but here I want to share a few things I’ve done internally as well. Please consult a dermatologist before starting any new skincare regime.

HYPERPIGMENTATION

To fight my hyperpigmentation I have incorporated 3 Vitamin C Products into my skincare routine along with a very strong SPF. A good SPF is mandatory when using any Vitamin C or Retinol Product. My favorite is Supergoop SPF 40 Daily Moisturizer. It’s super light and can even be worn under makeup. SPF helps so that your dark spots don’t get darker when exposed to sun rays. Until you have a good SPF your dark spots will always get darker when in the sun. Vitamin C is amazing for helping with dark spots and evening skin tone. My favorites are: Hyper Clear Brightening Clearing Vitamin C Serum, Pixi Beauty Vitamin C Tonic and Pixi Beauty Vitamin C Juice Cleanser.

Hyper Clear Brightening Clearing Vitamin C Serum is my Go-To for hyperpigmentation. This serum has 15% Vitamin C and has lightened even my deepest darkest spots. USE CODE: monroe15 for 15% Off.

FUN FACT: There are no contraindications to using Vitamin C & Retinol together. It’s best if you use a Vitamin C product first and wait an hour or so before applying a retinol being that they work at different PHs. If you apply a Vitamin C in the morning you are fine to apply a Retinol at night. Please consult a dermatologist for more details.

TEXTURED SKIN

It’s normal to have textured skin. No one has perfectly smooth skin. It’s impossible especially with hair follicles. But if you’ve noticed you have rough skin (which could be an issue with dead skin build up) then a good exfoliator is what you need in your skincare arsenal. I have 4 products I love to use when I need to exfoliate my skin of dead skin and to refresh the brightness and luminosity of my skin: Obagi Retinol .5%, Elemis Dynamic Resurfacing Gel Mask, Elemis Papaya Enzyme Exfoliator and Elemis Lactic Acid Peptide 4 Overnight Radiance Peel. I’ve outlined my weekly night-time routine below. I like to give my face a rest night between each treatment. When I notice my skin is rough from dead skin I use the Elemis Dynamic Resurfacing Gel Mask or the Elemis Papaya Enzyme Exfoliator 1x weekly to restore my skin to a smooth texture. Both the Retinol and Lactic Acid Radiance Peels are extremely light treatments, so much so that they could be used nightly but I like to rotate.

My Current Weekly Nighttime Routine

Night 1: Obagi Retinol .5%

Night 2: Elemis Peptide 4 Nighttime Recovery Oil

Night 3: Elemis Peptide Overnight Radiance Peel

Night 4: Elemis Peptide 4 Nighttime Recovery Oil

Night 5: Obagi Retinol .5%

Night 6: Elemis Peptide 4 Nighttime Recovery Oil

Night 7: Elemis Peptide 4 Overnight Radiance Peel

LARGE PORES

My large pores are genetic. Everyone is my family has very noticeable large pores on our cheeks which means more bacteria build up which can lead to increased acne. So I make it my business to double cleanse to make sure my more susceptible pores are clean. I love using my Chanel Le Coton Pads to gently cleanse with my Pixi Beauty Vitamin C Tonic Daily. My favorite cleansers are the Elemis Gentle Foaming Facial Wash combined with the Pixi Beauty Vitamin C Juice. I’ve also taken to using Elemis Peptide 4 Nighttime Recovery Oil every few nights as a night serum to dramatically shrink my pores.

INTERNALLY

I’ve done a few things internally to help with my skin issues. Yes, I drink a lot of water but more than that I have decreased my refined sugar intake (basically anything that comes packaged like cookies and such). I have also cut milk from my diet. Years ago I had severe painful cystic acne and after I stopped drinking milk this form of acne completely disappeared. I am also lactose intolerant and would have the worst gas and cramping after consuming milk. Since cutting milk from my diet 10 years ago, I have not only felt better, I rarely ever get cystic acne. Now oat milk is my favorite milk substitute. I also take Olly vitamins for skin. They have gummy vitamins as well as soft gels. I’ve noticed a great improvement in my skin by taking these vitamins on a regular basis.

Trust me everyone thinks they are experts when it comes to skin. They expect everyones skin to react the way their skin does, how narcissistic. Do your own research. Document when and how your skin behaves under different conditions and consult a dermatologist. Sometimes drinking water and changing your pillow case every 2 days while using a brand new paper towel to dry your face with every time you wash it isn’t enough. Sometimes genetics play a part and you may have to just accept that. Skin can be a very sensitive subject if you let it be. Don’t get discouraged if all the things people are telling you works for them, don’t work for you. Shut out the noise and find beauty in whatever you see in the mirror and try to take control of what you can.
