It’s boiling hot in New York City and whenever I get the urge, I throw on an easy outfit, grab my mask and head out to get some vitamin D and perhaps a taco or two. Even though summer feels a lot different this year I’ve been making a conscious effort to get out and enjoy it as much as possible safety and responsibly. Before we know it, it will be winter and getting out to do anything will be that much harder. I enjoy early morning walks during the week after my 7:30am workouts. The streets of Harlem are quiet and it feels like I have the entire city to myself. Anywho, there are a few things I reach for when getting dresses for these super hot and humid summer days and I’m going to share them with you in this blog post. This outfit I’m wearing is a pretty good example of the 7 things I’ll be wearing all summer. Trust me I’ve made variations of this same outfit at least 10 times and if it can work for me, it can certainly work for you. I’ve included my picks for each of the 7 items below as well.
I recently asked in a YouTube video is my subscribers would want to see my tiny tops collection and many said yes! Which was surprising to me because I thought I was the only one who loved a tiny top. I got so many questions about this one that I wore recently with a dusty pink blazer that I had to find an affordable dupe from ASOS. Tiny tops are super versatile because you can wear them with anything. My favorite way to wear them is with a pair of high waisted mom jeans and a blazer like I did here. I also love wearing them with maxi skirts. They are wonderful because essentially its like wearing a bra or a bathing suit top especially when its really hot out. But I like that they look amazing under light summer blazers and denim jackets too.
I know biker shorts aren’t everyones cup of tea but people bought a lot of them this summer according to Afterpay data. Lol. You all know I’m an Afterpay ambassador so I was have data to back up what people actually bought this spring and summer. Yep biker shorts made the list. Whether you are here for the trend or not, they are extremely comfortable and go with just about everything. I have a variety of biker shorts in different lengths, fabrics and colors and I must say I love them all. These are from Jacquemus but I also have several longer pair from Boohoo that were just $5 and they are my most worn bottoms in the summer.
A Light Blazer
A blazer makes everything look more put together and in the summer I usually carry a light linen blazer with me everywhere I go. Mainly because I don’t like being too cold and a lot of times stores and such have their air conditioners blasting. So for a little extra layer I like to carry a nice tailored blazer. This one I’m wearing is from The Frankie Shop and they specialize in very well made blazers but a lot of them are fairly expensive. You can get the same look for less from Storets, H&M and & Other Stories. If your wearing barely anything, which is how I like to dress when it’s 90 degrees outside a lightweight blazer goes a long way to add a bit of sophistication to a summer look.
A Silk or Satin Scarf
There’s something about a silk scarf that I love. It adds an element of femininity to any outfit. It’s very fabulous and glamorous to wear a silk scarf around your head or neck, yes even in the dead of a boiling hot summer. I prefer wearing it on my head for 2 main reasons: It keeps my head cool and protects my middle part from the suns rays and it can mask a bad hair day. See there, 2 birds with one stone. I actually have a ton of vintage silk scarves that I thrilled for less than 2 dollars each but I also love going on ETSY every summer and racking up on stunning vintage silk scarfs.
I’ve already written an entire blog post about every pair of white shoes to buy this summer from mules, to flats to pumps like these Balenciaga dreams I’m wearing in these photos. A white shoe is a must have for summer. They literally go with anything and I love the way a crisp white shoe looks against my brown skin. Remember the color white is a rich color…anytime white is worn whether that be in clothing or accessories the look is elevated to another level and looks all the more expensive.
I love a good pair of sunglasses, the bigger the better. I’m really into large sunglasses for 2 reasons this summer: because they look great on my face shape and because they provide the top half of my face with some protection from the sun. The last thing I need is for the top half of my face to be darker from the sun and the lower half to be lighter being that it’s covered by a mask 95% of the time I’m outside. LOL. It’s all about balance people.
A Face Mask
And that brings us to the final piece that I’ll be wearing all summer long and you should be wearing it too…and that my friends is a mask. Don’t worry my mask was in my little white purse as I took these photos and right back on my face it went when we were done. I’ve also taken to shooting content extremely early in the morning, I’m talking 8am before people are on the streets. If you are looking for some really cool mask, I love the double layered linen masks. I feel like they go with everything and I have a double layer of protection. And y’all know how I feel about linen…it’s the fabric of the summer and probably my favorite fabric of all time.
