Finding Personal Style

IMG_8288

I do a lot of interviews for cool online publications and a question I’m always asked is: What 3 words to describe my personal style? That’s always a really tough question because those three words change every day, every month, every year. Personal style is something that evolves over time. The shit I was wearing 3 years ago is not what I’d gravitate towards today. I spent most of my twenties in skin tight body con dresses from American Apparel with a pair of converses. That was my go-to look and it worked well. Today, body con just doesn’t thrill me. It doesn’t move me. I show a lot less skin but I still love a good bodysuit or leotard paired with a high waisted mom jean. I really didn’t know what my style was until I was into my thirties.

I did that whole bohemian thing, the only thrifted thing, the vintage thing, the oversized everything thing, the rocker only thing, the business look thing, the monochrome thing, the overly colorful thing. If there was a trend I liked, I tried it. And honestly I think that’s the best way to find what works for you. Don’t be afraid to try something and laugh when you look back at the photos and think “What the hell was I thinking” when you look back at them in a few years. I still have pieces from my high school wardrobe that I cherish and were timeless enough to work for me right into adulthood. Those are the pieces that you build your wardrobe around. I tried enough trends to know what I like and more importantly what I didn’t like. It took a lot of trial and error. What I would say for those who are trying to discover what their style is, is DON’T TRY TO BE SOMEONE ELSE. If you see a trend and you like it try it. Who cares who else doesn’t like it. Sometimes we get a little stuck asking our friends or everyone else under the sun, what they think about something, particularly clothing. When it’s gonna be on your back, your opinion is the only one that really matters. You can miss out on something great because your friend doesn’t share the same taste as you.

When I first started blogging I made the mistake of trying to dress like everyone else and trying to be like the bloggers who were “Making it” at that moment. Truly that lasted all of about 2 months because it became exhausting and it did nothing but make me feel lost and small. Being true to you and what you like is the first step of finding your own unique sense of self and personal style. And consequently getting older and growing as a person will only solidify what you feel empowered in, what makes you feel sexy, what drives you and compels you to buy something. I really didn’t feel that strongly about my appearance until I hit thirty and I’m grateful for all the lessons I learned along the way. One being, no one should ever wear white stockings except little old church ladies (and I let them slide because it’s practically engrained in their generations psyche).

So lovely to come across your blog. I can relate to finding my sense of style now that I am in my thirties too. I think because I am more confident about who I am, have accepted what my body is, it’s taught me to dress for my body better. Also because I’m less concerned about what people think I just go ahead and wear what I want. With so many bloggers around, it can get exhausting if you try to do what everyone is doing and be trendy and moreover leave you backrupt lol… I love your style. Keep inspiring. Xo Veronica

Thank you so much Veronica for reading and taking the time to comment. I feel like as creative people we’ve all been there where we tried to emulate and couldn’t keep up. I’ve certainly been there. It’s a good learning experience for sure. Thanks again for reading and I hope you’ll stay awhile.

Man, this resonates with me on many levels. As an independent freelancer, I’m always trying to replicate the actions of those that I think are “making it”, and it’s exhausting … and not the way to make yourself stand out in a crowded field. Finding a way to be true to ourselves and develop our own voices, whether it be in fashion, writing, or life In general, and being comfortable showing off our strengths is so deeply tied to finding satisfaction in life. I like the way this post highlights that.

I’ve got a lunch date with a girlfriend today and I’m inspired to wear something daring!
