3 Tips for Wearing White Without Ruining It

I recently did a blog post on the 7 Ways to Look Expensive Without Looking Basic and one of my tips was to wear white. Lots of people actually commented on Instagram that white is indeed super chic. I used to avoid wearing white because there was no way I could keep it clean or not ruin it immediately. I’m the stain queen with my messy eating and makeup seems to travel all over my body and end up on my clothes. But now I don’t worry so much about stains. In fact, the very first time I wore this white linen Jacquemus top, I stained it with makeup. No joke yall, the exact day I bought it, I thought I’d be cute and wear it and yes, I stained it. LOL. Luckily, one of my tips is my secret weapons for stains. I’ve since worn this top 3 more times without a care in the world. Here are my 3 tips for wearing white without ruining it!

GET THEE THE LAUNDRESS

I got put on to The Laundress last year and I’ve been a huge fan ever since. They actually sent me over a set of their products and I use them on a weekly basis. The two products I really love are the Unscented Stain Solution, The Le Labo Rose Scented Detergent (AHHHHMAZING) and The Delicate Wash. I use the stain solution anytime I get a makeup or food stain on a garment. All you have to do is drench the stain with the solution, leave it on for a few minutes and then throw it in the wash or hand wash it. Y’all this stuff works like a charm. I’ve gotten red lipstick and brown makeup stains out of white pieces from linens to cottons.  I even used it to get a stain out of my favorite pair of denim jeans. Y’all know I wear a ton of satin and silk pieces too from slip dresses to satin skirt. It’s really easy to stain those delicate fabrics either with sweat, oils or anything else! I just hand wash those pieces after applying The Laundress Delicate Wash to the stains and then air dry them. It works like a charm. I’m currently air drying my favorite leopard slip dress from Forever 21. I also use The Laundress Delicate Wash for my lingerie and my reusable makeup wipes.

CONSIDER THE ORDER OF THINGS

Anything white that you can put on easily should be put on last. For example, white linen button up shirts or slip dresses you can step into and pull up are easy. Tops that you have to pull over your head or are very tight and difficult to get into and out of (like this Jacquemus top I’m wearing), should be put on before you do your makeup (if you wear makeup). Just exercise care and also drape a large towel around your neck and shoulders so if any makeup falls, it will hit the towel and not your precious white piece. I’d also exercise the same care when taking off your difficult white pieces or tops. Wrap a towel around your neck and shoulders and use a wipe to remove all your makeup and have a squeaky clean face before removing your garment to avoid makeup transfer. For silks and satins put on your lotions, sunscreens and perfumes at least 15 minutes before getting dressed to avoid oil stains.

DOUBLE UP

Just accept that stains will happen. That shouldn’t prevent you from wearing one of the chicest colors (or non colors) in the spectrum. White definitely is chic but the shelf life of a white piece is always shorter than any other color. If you love it and you have the means, buy double! I love a good crisp white crop top or bralette top but I run them into the ground especially in the summer with the dreaded yellow pit stains. Luckily, the Laundress Stain Solution treats old and new stains but still once those stains are permanent throw it away! Thus, if I really love a white top, I buy doubles and I always invest in good quality like linen and satin which has a longer lifespan. I actually loved this white linen button up from H&M so much I bought 3! I live in them every summer so it was a necessity.

What are your tips for keeping your whites white and navigating the world of stains?

Thanks for the tips. It’s like white shirts are magnetic when I wear them. The dirt just hops off the ground onto my shirt. Lol. Having white shirts is a must. I’ll give the laundress a go.

Rubbing baby powder on the sleeves and cuffs of a white blouse will also help prevent staining, just make sure you rub it on or it will have you out here looking ashy
