5 Tips for Shopping Trend Pieces

[one_half padding=”0 15px 0 0″]I try not to follow trends too closely but I can’t help myself. We are all inundated with trends every minute of every day (that we are awake). Even if I don’t give two sh*ts about what Kylie Jenner is wearing, I’m still gonna see it whether I flip a page in a magazine or change the channel. It’s hard to filter what’s going to stick around and what’s not. It’s even harder to decide whether you want to try a trend or not. Really, that’s what fast fashion is for! Fast fashion brands like Forever 21 and Zara make it easy to try out filtered versions of luxury designer brands. That topic in itself a whole other blog post. But the just of it is that trendy pieces are more affordable than ever. There is a grey area when it comes to differentiating a Trendy Piece from a Timeless Staple Piece and it begins and ends with you. I’d advise anyone to try the trends they find appealing.[/one_half][one_half_last padding=”0 0 0 15px”]Find an affordable version and give it a go. If it sticks add it to your repertoire of staple pieces. This is often what happens for me. I’m not really into the cowboy trend. I have 1 pair of cowboy inspired boots and have worn then a few times and realized they aren’t my thing. No harm, no foul, the boots were a gift from a brand. Now if I absolutely adored them, I might consider investing in a pair of very well made versions of them for a higher price point. It could be a luxury buy or a luxury consignment buy. But I’d want at least one pair that would get me through life. That’s the way I look at it. A pair that won’t fall a part after 2 seasons. A pair that retains value so if I ever do tire of them I can always resale them on websites like The Real Real and collect a cute coin to then purchase something else I adore.[/one_half_last]

Here are 5 tips to consider when shopping trends.

1. Trends are fleeting but try them anyway. How else will you know if it’s for you?

2. When indulging in a trend try an inexpensive version first.

3. When you’re sure you love it make an investment in a well made version that will last you forever and retain it’s resale value.

4. Trends are cyclical, it ALWAYS comes back in style (even the ugly ones).

5. Wear whatever makes you happy not because society tells you it’s the new it thing.

Some trends I’m loving at the moment include: Dramatic shoulder pieces, White Boots, Dainty Rings and Necklaces, Satin and Silk Pieces, Bright Neon Pieces and of course anything Snake Print.

What trends have you turned into staples?

I love number 5. I think that as I got older, I really embraced the idea of wearing whatever I love not because it’s the new “it” thing.

Another tip that I’ve found works over the years is buying a smaller item related to the trend, to ‘try it out’. Leopard print caught your eye but don’t know if you’d look good in it head to toe? Try a leopard print bag or clutch for starters.

This is absolutely my rule and why I can’t completely swear off fast fashion. Nothing like trying something on for size at Zara before you splurge on the real thing.
