The best in Oils, Serums and Creams

IMG_9417

I used to think that one would never put oil on their face. I’m already a pretty shiny person after having makeup on for more than an hour. Somehow I manage to be oily yet dry at the same damn time. How, I don’t know. In the Winter my seborrheic dermatitis was in full force. My forehead was a dry desert and my hairline overturned to quickly (producing flaky skin) I began to drench my edges in the oil of Gods, Jamaican Black Castor Oil. I’d already been using 100% Aloe Vera Juice to spray down my scalp and Marley Twists and noticed that it also dramatically helped cure my dermatitis. Then to cut down on time, I added the Jamaican Black Castor oil to my 100% Aloe Vera Juice spray bottle and began spraying not only my hair but also my face. For once my forehead was smooth and I didn’t have to exfoliate everyday to remove dead skin build up. That’s when I was truly sold on the benefits of oil, not only for your hair but also for your skin as well.

OILS

For my hair and face, I’m all for Jamaican Castor Oil. It has done wonders for my edges, eyebrows and something about it helped with my flaky skin as well. I also use it on the ends of my hair when I do a twist out on my natural hair. It helps to hold the curl. To seal in moisture after moisturizing my face I love a little Pure Maracuja Oil by Tarte. I’ve also been into Certified Pure Emu Oil as well, which I never even heard of, until sent some by Platinum Skin Care. Since using the Emu Oil, my skin has never been so smooth. It has amazing healing properties and gets absorbed deeply within the skin, and thus can be used before applying other skincare products to get them more deeply as well. It has healing properties so is great for your skin after chemical peels. For my hair, especially when I was rocking marley twist, my go-to oil was AMLA Legend Silkening Oil Mist. This stuff has Indian Alma Oil in it and it smells so so good. If I could wear it as a perfume I would. I also loved when people hugged me and commented on how good my hair always smells. 100% Extra Virgin Coconut Oil by Shea Moisture is the absolute best when detangling after having any sort of braids or weaves.

SERUMS

When did serums become so huge?!? I don’t know but anything that can help keep my skin supple, wrinkle free, pore-less and glowing, I’m all for! Along with the Emu Oil by Platinum Skin Care, I was also sent their High Octane Vitamin C Serum. Now this stuff is potent and tingles a little when it goes on but it sure as hell cleared up the 3 dark spots I’ve had on my left cheek for over 3 months in about 1.5 weeks time. When I’m feeling extra fancy after rinsing off a mask and its still day time, I like to go bare faced with just a medicine drop or two of Sephora regenerating oil-serum. Now see, I didn’t know whether to include this in oils or serums but hey its both! It’s super light and has a wonderful fresh feeling and smell. I was in need of a good Vitamin C Serum after using all of my Platinum Skin Care sample and have seen a lot of good things about Ole Henriksen truth serum collagen booster which is a potent vitamin C complex to brighten, smooth and reduce the signs of aging. I’ve been using it for about a week and so far so good. I like to use it over night. It has definitely aided in brightening the over all appearance of my skin.

CREAMS

While perusing instagram I came across this CHUDA Healing Hydration Cream by Dr. Elena Ocher. Can I just express how deeply in love with the cream I am. I use it nearly everyday before applying my makeup or when just going barefaced. What I love about this cream is that its not greasy. It doesn’t make you shiny but it’s extra moisturizing and it lasts all day. It can be used on sensitive skin like mine and barely has a smell. I’m not into putting things on my face that are too fragrant, it almost always breaks me out. I also love the packaging. This cream is magical and I expect it to blow up soon so get your now. In addition to CHUDA I’m loving Ultra Repair Cream by Fab First Aid Beauty. Its perfect on the go, in my purse when I don’t want to carry the CHUDA around. It’s also great for dry hands as well.

HONORABLE MENTION

OLE Henriksen Grease Relief cleansing clothes are the best thing since sliced bread. I love that one side of the cloth had exfoliations protrusions and the other side is smooth for cleansing. I’ve noted a big difference in the size of the pores on my cheeks since using these on a daily basis to remove my makeup. Get them, you won’t be sorry.

Awesome post Monroe!! I have to agree with you that JBCO is “the oil of Gods” as I’ve been using it for years on my hair.

But my favorite skincare product and current beauty obsession is “Mask of Magnaminty” by Lush Cosmetics. I do face masks every 2-3 days (pampering yourself while making your skin flawless is always a win) and Mask of Magnaminty is a summer staple. It works overtime giving your skin a deep clean and exfoliates at the same time. It also has peppermint oil, giving you a nice and refreshing tingle. It’s a must try! Also by Lush, “ULTRABLAND” – a simple creamy-oil cleanser that cleanses, removes makeup and resets acne prone skin after using for a month. It’s magic. I love LUSH because their cruelty free and all natural so you’re certain that only the “good stuff” is going on your face. Try them out (they give free samples )

I’ve been using oils on my face for over a year now, My favorite is the Sibu Beauty Sea Buckthorn Oil. The first night I tried it my skin was super smooth in the morning. Since the bottle is so small and $$$, I only use it about once a week.

This is a very thorough post and it peaked my curiosity on a couple products I’d like to try. I love Ole henriksen products, but I also am loyal to drugstore brands. Currently I’m washing my face with Neutrogena acne bar soap during the day and Ponds cold creme at night. I had a consultation with Khiel’s and found out my skin has changed since I’ve gotten older. It’s more oily and normal instead of dry and oily. It was very informative.

I also like to make my own products with fresh herbs and love doing facial steams.

I rotate masks but my current mask is Aztec Healing clay with ACV, it literally sucks everything out of your skin and tightens pores. I love doing that after a workout.
