I’ve partnered with Pantene and their new Nutrient Blends Collection to share my hair story and my wash day routine. My hair story starts when I was just a toddler. I remember my mother getting me ready for church on Sundays. I wore my white stockings, patent leather Mary Jane’s and my favorite blue dress. I was always excited to see what she’d do with my hair. I’d sit between her legs on the floor while she’d manipulate my puffy mane into intricate braids with beads on the ends or puffy twists with colorful barrettes at the base and hair bows in different shapes and colors on the ends. I remember the smell of grease and how she’d slick my baby hairs down. I hated getting my hair done. I was tender headed and impatient but I always loved seeing myself in the mirror when she was done.

My grandma has had her own hair salon for over 20 years. When I was a bit older, I started going to get my hair done at her shop. It was always so much fun and I felt a little more grown up, sitting in the chair with my legs dangling while my grandmother gave me my first kiddie perm. I’d watch everyone intensely as they got their hair done in big roller sets and intricate finger waves. The smell of hair, curling irons and hair spray filled my nostrils. It was my grandma who taught me how to really care for my hair. She taught me how to protect my hair with satin and silk bonnets. She taught me how to wrap my hair at night to preserve my curls. She taught me the importance of moisturizing my hair and scalp and reducing tension on my temples. Those things always stuck with me.

As I grew into my teenage years, I learned to do my own perms. I experimented a lot with braids from micro-braids to crochet braids. It was a family affair to all get together and help me take my braids out after a month of wearing them. My dad even got in on the action and often helped me take my braids out with a rat-tail comb. I’d go to my neighbors house and she’d do up-do pony tails for me with curly extensions for my middle school picture day photos. I remember folding my ears to my face when she’d bring a hot comb heated on a stove to my edges to straighten them before she’d slick them down with gel.

By the time I was in my late twenties, I couldn’t remember what my natural hair looked like. I’d been getting perms since I was 10 years old. Out of sheer curiosity I decided not to get perms anymore and to grow out my natural hair while getting a protective style every 1.5 months. I decided on Havana Twists with the invisible root technique so that my scalp was always accessible for me to cleanse and moisturize. For a full two years, I got twists every 1.5-2 months and gave my natural hair a 1-2 week break in between. As my hair grew, I cut off all the permed ends. I remember rocking my afro for the first time ever in public at Curl Fest and feeling so free. I had no idea what to do with my hair but I loved seeing what my hair looked like. It’s big, coily and a deep brown color. I’ve since remained natural and I love the versatility of my hair.

MY WASH DAY ROUTINE

I’ve had the pleasure of using the new Fortifying Damage Repair Collection with Castor Oil shampoo and conditioner from the Pantene Nutrient Blends’ Collection for my last 3 wash days and I absolutely love them. Castor oil was already a huge part of my hair routine! I use castor oil on my edges and on my temples where my hair tends to be pretty thin to grow. I even use castor oil on my eyebrows and eyelashes to promote growth, so having this amazing oil already in my shampoo and conditioner was a huge plus. My hair goes through a lot of manipulation with me doing twist outs, slick pony tails and wearing wigs on a regular basis so I need to make sure my hair is strong and healthy. This collection was made to protect and repair damaged, overworked hair. Which is pretty much my hair in a nutshell.

The shampoo is gentle yet definitely helps me get out all of the product buildup from twist outs and pony tails. It also smells amazing but not overpowering. The great thing about this collection is that it’s free of sulfates, parabens, dye and mineral oil! Basically all the bad things for your hair, aren’t included. The conditioner not only gives my hair instant shine, but it also helps to detangle my hair and set my natural curls free. One thing I noticed after using the Pantene Fortifying Damage Repair Collection with Castor Oil is that my hair sheds noticeably less. I usually have a fair amount of breakage after washing and with these products there’s barely any shedding or hair breakage. My drain is thanking Pantene right now and so is my hair. My twist outs after washing with this collection are always perfect. My hair is shiny, smooth and defined.

If you’re in the market for a new shampoo and conditioner to protect and repair your hair definitely try Pantene’s Nutrient Blends Fortifying Damage Repair Collection with Castor Oil. What’s your Hairitage Story? Share your hair story below in the comments!

I’ve been getting perms (relaxers) since I was 7 and attempted to go back natural a few times. Currently I’m still relaxed. My hair has always been thick, like high density piano wire thick. Lol
