Women in The World Summit 2019

Thanks to InfluenceHer Collective I was able to attend the Women in the World Summit this year at Lincoln Center. I just recently heard about this summit last year, although this year is the 10th Year Anniversary of the Summit. It’s a 3-Day Summit, founded by Tina Brown and it’s jam packed with badass women making a real difference in the world whether that be in social activism, science or fashion and beyond. When I saw that speakers like Oprah, Anna Wintour, and Diane Von Furstenberg were amongst some of the many women speaking, I knew I had to attend and find something to wear. Shopbop to the rescue with this two-piece fuscia number by Anna October. If I was going to be in the presence of greatness, I had to look the part. The Women in the World Summit did not disappoint.

I attended on the third and final day of the summit. I’m pretty sad I missed Oprah but when faced with the prospect of cleaning up the Brooklyn Waterfront or listening to Oprah speak, I thought to myself: “What would Oprah do?” I did however get to listen to one of the greats in the fashion business, Anna Wintour. She dropped a few gems too, the main one sticking out to me is that indecisiveness is not a quality a leader should have. She didn’t get to this monumental space in fashion by being flighty. I also thoroughly enjoyed a panel with Bryon Cranston (yes, the lead character from Breaking Bad) about Alzheimers and his personal connection to the disease with his own mother. I actually learned a lot about Alzheimers and how being a black women is a risk factor. One of my favorite presentations was a conversation with model and activist Adwoa Aboah. You can’t walk 5 feet in New York City without seeing her face plastered everywhere. She’s on every other page in all the magazines and she founded Gurls Talk, an open space online and in person where anyone can speak their truths. She spoke on her substance addiction, depression and suicide attempt as well as difficulties she had being biracial in a predominately white space.

My favorite presentation of the day was a conversation with The Exiles: Two Women, Moudi Aljohani and Masih Alinejad who had been exiled from their prospective countries of Saudi Arabia and Iran. Masih was perhaps the most passionate and purposeful speaker of the entire day. She ignited the entire crowd with her story of being kicked out of her country simply for asking too many questions and wanting basic human freedoms in Iran. I ran into her outside after her passionate presentation and embraced her. She is the true meaning of activist. Even though she can’t go home, through the power of social media she fights for the women in her country and around the world everyday. We ended the day with a discussion with Hillary Clinton which was the icing on the cake of an amazing, inspiring and fire igniting day. Stay tuned I’ll be vlogging about the conference soon so make sure to subscribe to my Youtube Channel.

If you’re interested in taking a look at any of the panels (which I implore you all do) they are all available to watch for free Here! Definitely try and get your ticket next year. There was something truly moving about being in a room filled with women kicking ass and taking names. Special thanks to InfluenceHer for this amazing opportunity. I am truly living my dream.
