Harlem

I admit went I first moved to New York City, I didn’t know too much about Harlem. I had been once while in High School with a friend just to check out The Apollo. We also checked out NYU and Columbia’s campus’ because I was considering applying to colleges in New York City. Fast forward 5 years later and I was accepted to NYU graduate school for their Doctor of Physical Therapy Program. I lived on campus on 21st street and 1st Avenue and I always wondered where all the black people were. Seriously I wondered that all the time. Finally after a few months of living downtown I came up to Harlem because I NEEDED a good southern meal and I was told it was the place to go (Go to Melba’s and get the fried catfish and mac n’ cheese!). I can tell you when I came up out of the subway on 125th Street and Lenox, and I saw all these beautiful black people. I literally said “Home” out loud to myself. It was a no brainer when after my 1 year in graduate student housing was up, Harlem was were I moved.

American Apparel Turtleneck Bodysuit (40% Off Sale) | Forever 21 Jeans | Tibi Fur Flats | No125NYC Tote

GET THE LOOK

I love everything about Harlem. Sure it’s kinda dirty but so is all of Manhattan. I could do without all the cat calling in the summer time too. Some dude actually grabbed my arm yesterday and I gave him the death stare before he let me go on my merry way. I love the restaurants, especially Il Cafe Latte which is set in a restored brownstone. I love my running trail along Riverbank State Park and looking out over the Hudson River up to George Washington Bridge. I also love visiting Sugar Hill Market and checking out all the vendors like No125NYC who makes this awesome tote. There’s just a feeling in Harlem that I don’t get from any other borough especially in the summer time. There’s nothing quite like Harlem in the summer and strolling down Convent Ave or Striver’s Row. I’ve found that I hardly ever carry a purse anymore. If I need anything of necessity I just throw it in one of my Harlem totes (I have 3 lol).

Also, I’m really into turtlenecks now. They are the cool new It item. I find that a sleek black one like this can elevate any look even a pair of mom jeans from Forever 21. There’s just something so chic and old school about a turtleneck. Luckily since American Apparel is having a 40% off everything sale, I was able to cop 3 of them to get me through the next few years.
